Medical device design and development for grant-funded teams

Funded by Innovate UK, NIHR i4i or SBRI Healthcare? We design and test your device against your work packages, and build the technical file as we go.

Who this is for

  • Small funded teams. Founders and spinouts with the clinical insight and the funding, but no in-house engineering or regulatory team.
  • Projects with a physical device. Our work is mechanical: housings, mechanisms, fluid paths, wearables and the rigs to test them.
  • Teams writing an application. We can scope the engineering work packages with you before you submit.
  • Teams just awarded. We turn your work packages into a plan and get the first build on the bench.

Grant-funded projects run to work packages and milestones, so we plan our work the same way. If you’ve just been awarded, our guide to what happens after an Innovate UK or i4i grant covers the first 90 days.

How we fit around your grant

Before you apply

Scope and quote

We help scope the engineering work packages and give you a written quote to put in the application. We're happy to be named as a subcontractor.

After the award

A plan you can run

We turn your work packages into dated tasks and milestones that match the Gantt chart in your application.

During the project

Builds you can report

Each work package ends with something you can show your monitoring officer, such as a working build or a test report.

Throughout

Records for your file

Design decisions and test results are written down as we go, so they feed straight into your technical file.

Writing an application?

Talk to us before you submit. We can help you scope the engineering work packages and give you a written quote for the subcontractor costs. We’re also happy to be named as a subcontractor in the application.

A realistic plan at this stage makes the project much easier to run once the money arrives.

Work we take on for funded projects

Recent funded work

HelloCath is an early stage bladder care venture backed by Innovate UK. Its founder came to us with a strong idea and no engineering or regulatory support. We took the device from concept sketches through several rounds of silicone prototypes, with the regulatory groundwork done alongside.

“Your research even encouraged me to revisit an approach I had previously dismissed, which has added real value to the project.”
Antionette, Founder, HelloCath

Yes. We scope our work against your work packages and milestones, whichever body funds the project.

You do. Everything we create on your project, from CAD to test data, is assigned to you.

Yes. We’re happy to sign your NDA, or we can send you ours.

Get through project setup, then turn the application into a plan you can run week to week. Our guide to what happens after an Innovate UK or i4i award covers the first 90 days.

Plans usually change somewhere. If a test result sends the design in a new direction, we agree the change to the next work package with you before any extra work starts, so you can raise it with your monitoring officer early.
